“The Life and Prophecy of St. John the Baptist”

“There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe. He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light…. He said, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord, as said the prophet Isaiah.” (John 1:6-8, 23)

Today as the Catholic Church commemorates the Feast Day of the Martyrdom of St. John the Baptist, I present this mosaic mural which depicts his life and prophecy in the sanctuary of Parroquia San Juan Bautista in the central mountain town of Orocovis, Puerto Rico.

Conceived in three arches which represent the Holy Trinity, the story of St. John the Baptist is expressed across time in the sanctuary of Christ’s church and includes the priest and congregation today in the fulfillment of sacred liturgy. When viewed from the rear of the Church during Mass, the servers and congregation are seen as completing the work of art.

 

This mosaic mural, commissioned by Padre Jorge Santiago Cartagena  SDB,  is made up of over fifty different types/colors of tile; approximately 100,000 tiles constitute the completed work. They include Italian red marble, large porcelain floor tiles and a mixed variety of porcelain, ceramic, vitreous, iridescent and gold mosaic tessarae. The many varieties of tiles are meant to represent the intricate nature of Creation and all point up to our Risen Lord, the Incarnate and sum total of all Creation.

In the central arch Christ is resurrected in the full glory of the Holy Trinity as symbolized by three clouds and petals of the lily, the flower associated traditionally with the Resurrection. We are also reminded of Christ’s presence in the consecrated holy Eucharist by the appearance of His image in the circular form that surrounds His head. Viewing Christ from this perspective all things converge in Him, and the full prophecy of  St. John the Baptist (and in Christ’s own words “I am the Alpha and the Omega“) is expressed.

Below this is a depiction of the Orocovis countryside, center of town (Orocovis, pueblo) and the church itself (Parroquia San Juan Bautista) in the center depicting the New Jerusalem. At the bottom is The Way that leads to this kingdom through the proverbial “narrow gate” in the castle-like wall of the red marble which runs from under the altar to the four corners of the sanctuary and symbolizes the blood and sacrifice of St. John the Baptist, our Lord Jesus Christ and all the martyrs of the church.

Also depicted in the center arch heralding in the divine splendor of our Risen Lord, from left to right: Saints John Bosco, Domingo Savio, Peter, John the Baptist, and to the right of center, María Auxiliadora (Mary Help of Christians) with the Christ child, Elizabeth, Blessed Laura Vicuña and María Mazzarello.

The arch to the right of center expresses a domestic scene (extra-biblical, as imagined by the artist) of the Holy Family at the “charco” (water hole ), Saints Mary and Elizabeth with their young sons John and Jesus. As they go about their everyday washing, the children play and swim. The concept here is to associate our own workaday lives with that of the Holy Family, recognizing the sacredness of Creation and holiness of Love passed down to us through them, to help us see that we live our daily lives much like they did, experiencing the struggles and joys that life brings, and that we all live in the promise of our loving God.

The family is shown at the River Jordan which as all rivers, carries water from the mountains to the sea, symbolizing the flow and passage of time and our lives. We feel the same warmth of the sun, the refreshing breezes and cooling waters and the same beautiful earth and sky as did they. For these simple but profound gifts of life, in peace with family and the beauty of God’s creation, we can feel the closeness of our loving God.

The arch to the left of center shows St. John again in the River Jordan, portrayed as a river here in Puerto Rico. The scene symbolizes his ongoing mission as a sacrament of our church passed down through our own priests as ongoing conversion and baptism. We see John baptizing a contemporary youth which witnesses to this ongoing mission as well as the legacy pictured in the background: Orocobix and his family, the indigenous peoples of Puerto Rico, were converted, baptized and brought the Good News of salvation by our Spanish missionaries.

If we are blessed to view the mosaic during the Holy Mass we will realize that the mosaic, the sanctuary as background for the priests with the holy consecrated body of our Lord Jesus Christ, the altar servers and the congregation all work together in a moving way to bring the full significance, glory and honor of the gift of faith that has been handed down through our Catholic belief and teaching that holds for us the promise of salvation and glory of things to come.

The extensiveness of this project provided us with the opportunity to offer instruction in cutting tiles to a group of volunteers who wanted to learn and to help in completing the mosaic. It was a very good experience all around; the church saved some money, we were able to finish the project before schedule, the willing and hard-working participants were left with a deep sense of pride and newly acquired skills.

My wife Patricia and I  are deeply thankful for the kindness and generosity of Asdrúbal and Adria who opened their home as weekly lodging for us during the year and a half in which we worked on this mosaic mural.

And our thanks go out to the Padres and to all the many parishioners of Parroquia San Juan Bautista who stepped forward to participate in the completion of this mosaic mural. ¡Gracias de corazón, que Dios les bendiga a todos!

 

“La Vida y la Profecía de San Juan Bautista”

“Hubo un hombre enviado de Dios, el cual se llamaba Juan. Este vino por testimonio, para que diese testimonio de la luz, para que todos creyesen por él. No era él la luz, sino para que diese testimonio de la luz…”Dijo: Yo soy la voz del que clama en el desierto: Enderezad el camino del Señor, como dijo Isaías profeta.” (Juan 1:6-8, 23)

Hoy, como la Iglesia Católica conmemora el Día de la Fiesta del Martirio de San Juan Bautista, les presento este mural de mosaico que muestra su vida y la profecía en el presbiterio de la Parroquia San Juan Bautista en el pueblo de Orocovis en el mismo centro de Puerto Rico.

 Concebido en tres arcos que representan la Santísima Trinidad, la historia de San Juan Bautista se expresa a través del tiempo en el presbiterio de la iglesia de Cristo e incluye el sacerdote y la congregación de hoy en el cumplimiento de la liturgia sagrada. Cuando se ve desde la parte trasera de la iglesia durante la misa, los servidores y la congregación son vistas como de completar la obra de arte.

 Este mural de mosaico, comisionado por Padre Jorge Santiago Cartagena SDB, se compone de más de cincuenta tipos/colores de teselas diferentes; aproximadamente 100,000 teselas constituyen la obra completa. Incluyen mármol rojo italiano, grandes losas de porcelana y una variedad mixta de teselas de porcelana, cerámica, vítreo, iridescente y oro. Las muchas variedades de teselas representa la naturaleza intrincada de la Creación, y todos señalan arriba hacia nuestro Señor Resucitado, Encarnado, la totalidad de toda la Creación.

En el arco central Cristo es resucitado en la gloria de la Santísima Trinidad, simbolizada por los tres nubes y los pétalos de la flor de lis, la flor asociado tradicionalmente con la Resurrección. También se nos recuerda la presencia de Cristo en la Eucaristía consagrado en la aparición de su imagen en la forma circular que rodea su cabeza. Viendo a Cristo de esta perspectiva, todas las cosas convergen en Él, y la profecía completa de San Juan Bautista (y en las propias palabras de Cristo: “Yo soy el Alfa y la Omega“) se expresa.

Debajo de esto es una representación de la campiña de Orocovis, el centro del pueblo (“Orocovis pueblo”) y la propia iglesia Parroquia San Juan Bautista en pleno centro, que representa la Nueva Jerusalén. En la parte inferior es el camino que conduce a este reino a través de la proverbial “puerta angosta” en la pared que parece un castillo de mármol rojo que se extiende desde debajo del altar a las cuatro esquinas del presbiterio y simboliza la sangre y el sacrificio de San Juan el Bautista, de nuestro Señor Jesucristo y de todos los mártires de la iglesia.

También se muestra en el arco central, anunciando el esplendor divino de nuestro Señor Resucitado, de izquierda a derecha: los Santos Juan Bosco, Domingo Savio, Pedro, Juan el Bautista, y a la derecha del centro, María Auxiliadora con el niño Jesús, Isabel, Beata Laura Vicuña y Santa María Mazzarello.

El arco a la derecha del centro muestra una escena doméstica (extra bíblica, imaginada por el artista) de la Sagrada Familia en el charco, María y Isabel con sus hijitos Jesus y Juan. Mientras realizan el lavado cotidiano, los niños juegan y nadan. El concepto aquí es la de asociar nuestra propia vida cotidiana con la de la Sagrada Familia, reconociendo el carácter sagrado de la Creación y de la santidad del amor transmitido a nosotros a través de ellos, para ayudarnos a ver que vivimos nuestra vida diaria al igual que lo hicieron ellos, experimentando las luchas y alegrías que nos trae la vida, y que todos vivimos en la promesa de nuestro Dios amoroso.

 

 La familia se representa en el Río Jordán que, como todos los ríos, transporta el agua desde las montañaas hasta el mar, simbolizando el flujo y el paso del tiempo y de nuestras vidas. Sentimos la misma calidez del sol, la brisa y las aguas refrescantes, la misma bella tierra y el cielo al igual que ellos.

Por medio de estos regalos de la vida, sencillos pero profundos, en paz con la familia y con la belleza de la Creación de Dios, podemos sentir la cercanía y la promesa de nuestro Dios amoroso.

El arco a la izquierda del centro muestra a San Juan el Bautista, de nuevo en el Río Jordán, aquí representada como un río en Puerto Rico.

La escena simboliza su continua misión como sacramento de nuestra iglesia transmitido a través de nuestros propios sacerdotes en la conversión y el bautismo. Vemos a Juan bautizando a un joven de hoy, que da testimonio a esta misión continua, así como al legado representado en el fondo: Orocobix y su familia, el pueblo indígena de Puerto Rico, convertidos y bautizados por los misioneros españoles que traeron la Buena Noticia de la Salvación.

Si tenemos la bendición de ver el mosaico durante la Santa Misa, nos daremos cuenta de que el mosaico, el presbiterio como fondo para los sacerdotes con el cuerpo de nuestro Señor Jesucristo, los monaguillos y la congregación se unen en una manera conmovedora para llevar el significado completo, la gloria y el honor del don de la fe que ha sido transmitido por nuestra convicción Católica y la enseñanza que nos ofrece la promesa de la salvación y la gloria del porvenir.

La gran extensividad de este proyecto nos dió la oportunidad de ofrecer instrucción en el corte de teselas a un grupo de voluntarios que querían aprender y ayudar en la realización del mosaico. Era una experiencia buenísima por todos lados; la iglesia ahorró algo de dinero, pudimos terminar el proyecto a tiempo y los participantes voluntarios se quedaron con un profundo sentido de orgullo y con destrezas adquiridas.

Mi esposa Patricia y yo estamos profundamente agradecidos por la amabilidad y generosidad de Asdrúbal y Adria que abrieron su casa a nosotros como alojamiento semanal durante el año y medio en que trabajábamos en el mosaico.

Y nuestro agradecimiento a los Padres y a los muchos feligreses de la Parroquia San Juan Bautista que se ofrecieron a participar en la realización de este mural de mosaico. ¡Gracias de corazón, que Dios les bendiga a todos!
