St. Matthew high relief wood sculpture by AVonnHartung for St. Paul's Catholic Church (Pensacola, Florida)

St. Matthew

“St. Matthew”
A high relief wood sculpture, 12 x 33 x 3″, by AVonnHartung
Commissioned by Father Doug Halsema via Liturgical Consultant Dr. Steven Schloeder

For the ambo in St. Paul’s Catholic Church, Pensacola, Florida

Shown with the gospel in his study. The books on the shelf recall the five books of Moses, the prophetic word and his documentation of the ancestry and birth of Jesus (Mt 1:1-25).

The spilled inkwell and his symbol, the angel who brings him divine revelation remind us of our human limitations but also of the mysterious and miraculous ways God works the Holy Spirit into our lives.

The poinsettia flower recalls both the birth and resurrection of our Lord (extra biblical).

The inkwell is an artistic contrivance that leads us to understand the mysterious ways in which God works the Holy Spirit into our lives, as in the tribulations of the other Evangelists.
