Mural (central section) by AVonnHartung at Parroquia Santa Rosa de Lima, Barrio Amelia Guaynabo Puerto Rico
Commissioned by Padre Julio Victor Garcia 1996
In this 80-foot mural “Jesus crucified looks upward to a resurrection decked with thornless roses. On his right the good thief’s cross is empty because he has already gone to heaven; on the other side is the crucifix of the thief who scoffed, with an assault rifle as the crosspiece. Noah’s ark navigates an environmental deluge of pollution, and parrots of endangered species roost in the Tree of Life.”
(from news interview with artist by LISA MCGINLEY, Day Arts Writer, New London CT–Symbolist of the Sacred 2 September 1997)
THE MURAL IN THE SANCTUARY EXPRESSES THE CENTRAL DEVOTIONS OF SANTA ROSA;THE PASSION OF OUR LORD, HIS CRUCIFIXION AND TRIUMPH OVER DEATH THROUGH HIS RESURRECTION…..
INCLUDED IS SOME OF THE STORY OF SALVATION HISTORY AND THAT OF CHRIST’S CHURCH IN THE NEW WORLD UP UNTIL TODAY!
The composition is circular, reminding us of the cyclical nature of earth, the seasons and the seemingly endless repetition of history.
